DRILLING
SITE SELECTION AND
PERMITTING
Upon entering into contract with E.W.D., a well site will be selected and
staked based on building plans as well as state and local codes. Once selected,
Eastern prepares and applies for the permit through the local health and
building departments.
Once the permit has been approved and the date for drilling has arrived, the drilling
rig sets up over the selected site and proceeds to set casing. Casing is steel pipe,
conforming to state drilling codes that must extend approx. 1 foot above ground and at
least 20 feet into the bedrock.; creating a sanitary seal that minimizes the chance of contamination
from surface water entering the well.
Once the casing has been set, actual drilling commences. A drill bit is sent down the
casing at the same time that water is being introduced in to the bore.
This introduced water creates a "slurry" that will carry the cuttings
from the drilling up and out of the bore.
What determines enough water? The State of Connecticut
has established a code, dictating the minimum yield of water ( Gallons Per
Minute) as it relates to the well's depth. A decision to exceed the state's
minimum requirements will be made by the owner or general contractor, based upon
the anticipated water demands of the house. The drill rig operator will be
cognizant of the well's water production during drilling and will notify the
owner or G.C. present at the site, once code has been met and will determine
whether additional depth would be desirable.
FACT:
One foot of 6 inch well occupied by water equates to 1 1/2 gallons of storage; thus, greater depth may provide greater storage or water on hand, even if the actual yield (GPM's) does not increase with the depth.
Once the drilling operation has
been completed, a temporary well cap is fixed atop the casing, the rig and its
equipment are packed and the drilling rig leaves the site. Upon payment, a Well
Completion Report is prepared and sent to the various state and local agencies.
This report is required prior to any Certificate of Occupancy being issued to
the homeowner.
